This directory contains a crc listing for each disk in my library,
generated directly from my current master disks. Each listing was
generated with a sequence of commands of the form:
rls >ram:d001.files -q df0:
crc <ram:d001.files >ram:d001.crc -g
crc <ram:d001.crc -v
The last command is simply a check to make sure that the crc list
can be used to validate the disk contents.
These lists can tell you a lot about the state of your copy of
the library disks, but NOT whether or not you have an exact
duplicate of the library disk master. In particular:
(1) This mechanism only validates the file contents.
Generally this is what you are most interested in.
(2) It will not detect files which have been added
to a disk by a third party (and hence are not on
my master disks).
(3) It will not detect that a disk is infected with
a bootblock virus.
If you regularly distribute large numbers of my disks to third
parties, and one of your disks fails the CRC checks, you should
probably arrange to acquire a "good" copy. To ensure that only
valid copies are passed on, the disks should remain write protected
at all times.
